The Marina Neighborhood

The Marina neighborhood is one of the most sought after in the city, at the foot of the Golden Gate Bridge, where the city meets the bay.  Home to a large marina and its fleet of exotic yachts, residents in the million-dollar homes of the Marina appreciate the sun-swept views. Walkers and joggers have embraced the field’s shoreline path, known as the Golden Gate Promenade, and on sunny days, kids, picnickers and Frisbee enthusiasts blanket the grassy 28-acre expanse. Cyclists have their own bike-only path, and, when the wind is good, world-class sailboarders can be seen skipping and soaring across the water.

One of the main attractions in the Marina is the Palace of Fine Arts, a Roman Classical monument designed by Bernard Maybeck for the Panama-Pacific International Exposition in 1915. The rotunda, massive columns, and lagoon are a popular year-round attraction for tourists and locals alike; a favorite location for weddings and wedding party photographs for couples and travel magazines to get their iconic pictures.

Just east of the Marina is Fort Mason Center for Arts & Culture which hosts nearly two dozen non-profit and arts organizations as permanent residents. Current residents include the Pulitzer Prize winning Magic Theatre, City College’s Art Campus, BATS Improv, the SFMOMA Artists Gallery and the internationally acclaimed Greens Restaurant.

Fort Mason is also home to the Marina’s bustling farmers’ market! Sundays 9:30 am to 1:30 pm.

The shops and restaurants of the Marina always seem to be bursting at their seams with beautiful, young and fit 20- and 30-somethings. Union is arguably the best street in the city to window-shop the hours away on a sunny afternoon, and, a few blocks down, Chestnut stretching from Fillmore Street down to Divisadero has an incredible variety of high-quality restaurants catering to every palate. The singles scene is hopping on Friday and Saturday nights, with lots of fresh-faced postgrads with cocktails in one hand and cell phones in the other.  Sunny weekend days are truly dreamy in the Marina, especially down by the water. As far as Chestnut and Union are concerned, just follow this motto: Any day is a good day for shopping; any night, a good night for dining.
